Story of a Water Well in Chabanne/Petit-Goave, Haiti

- Hermina Hyacinthe

picture2On a hot summer day in July 2006 my heart was lead to a dusty hole where inhabitants of a remote village were forced to draw water for their daily needs.  In this remote village of Petit-Goave, Haiti I was visiting a property with a contractor for the potential construction of Ste Jeanne d’Arc Health Center.

picture1The sight of the muddy and contaminated water supply overwhelmed me with concerns and compassion for the people.  I offered to have a water well built in the area, but since there are no roads to transport the needed tools and materials to dig the well, the contractor indicated that it was not feasible.  Immediately some of the people formed a team and volunteered to carry the tools and materials on their heads.

The same month, upon my return to the United States, I sent money to the contractor for the construction of the well.  However water, the world’s most valuable commodity, is rare in the area and has been removed from the well at a faster rate than can be naturally replaced.  As a result, more water wells are needed in Chabanne/Petit-Goave, Haiti.  Please help Ste Jeanne d’Arc Health Center continue giving the gift of water by donating money for the construction and maintenance of two more water wells in Chabanne/Petit-Goave, Haiti.  Your gift will have a lasting effect.

I thank God every day for the opportunity to serve His people.

shrine1Restoration of the Shrine “Calvary of Christ Jesus” in Petit-Goave Haiti

The shrine “Calvary of Christ Jesus” has been in the center of Petit-Goave for decades.  On Good Friday, the Catholic Clergy of the Parish “Our Lady of Assumption” regularly leads the faithful in procession from the Church to the shrine in commemoration of the Passion of Christ.

The shrine “Calvary of Christ Jesus” was dilapidating.   In October 2006, Ste Jeanne d’Arc Health Center hired a contractor and had the shrine restored to the satisfaction of the people of Petit-Goave, Haiti.
